The Cognitive Psychophysiology Unit (CPU, head: Frank Rösler) at the Philipps-University Marburg studies behavior and accompanying brain activity while people are engaged in cognitive tasks as language comprehension and production, memory storage and retrieval, mental calculation, visual and spatial imagery, etc. The functional role of different brain areas, their mutual interaction on the influence of different experiences upon the functional role of neural systems is investigated. To this end, various measures and techniques are employed including paradigms from experimental psychology with behavioral measurements, brain imaging techniques (topographic mapping of event-related brain potentials, functional magnetic resonance imaging). In addition, behavioral deficits in patients with brain lesions are analyzed. Research of the group is supported by grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Associated with the CPU is the junior research group on cortical plasticity. This group (head: Brigitte Röder) is supported by a special program of the German Research Foundation (DFG) (Emmy-Noether Program). Research of this group is focussed on neural reorganizations due to learning, sensory deprivation or brain damage. Among others, compensatory behavior changes after total visual deprivation and their neural correlates are investigated. It is expected that the results can be used to improve rehabilitation programs both for patients with peripheral (e.g. blind and deaf people or amputees) or central nervous system lesions (e.g. stroke patients).
